"The Center for Asian Studies at Willamette University is pleased to welcome Shakuhachi "Grand Master," James Nyoraku Schlefer who will perform an evening concert this Thursday, Feb. 18, 7:30 - 9 pm, in Cone Chapel. Please mark your calendars. The Shakuhachi is a bamboo  flute that has been played in Japan for over 1200 years, captivating the minds and hearts of listeners. Remarkably simple in design, the sound is at once sensual and spiritual, capable of great emotional  depth."

Kuroishi Yosare Bushi is an energetic Obon dance from the village of Kuroishi, located at the center of Aomori prefecture.  In this region, Obon season is an event that the weather-beaten people of Aomori await all year.  For three days, huge parades of lined dancers celebrate the end of the harvest season with this dance.  It is a very exciting hand dance that summons the joy of being alive.  Instructors: Michelle Fujii & Toru Watanabe from Portland Taiko Class size limit: 20 Notes: All ages and beginners welcome! ********************************* Just let me know if you want to participate.
